What you need
According to Hytale’s server documentation, as repeated in hosting providers’ guides (see the sources below), a Hytale server needs:
- Java 25. The Adoptium (Temurin) distribution is the one most guides recommend.
- 4 GB of RAM as the minimum.
- UDP port 5520 by default, using QUIC, listening on
0.0.0.0unless you change it. - A 64-bit machine; both x64 and arm64 are supported.
The port is UDP, not TCP. This is the most common reason players cannot connect: the port is open for TCP but not for UDP.
How much RAM and CPU?
4 GB is the official minimum, but most public servers need more. Guides from hosting providers suggest 6 to 16 GB depending on player count and settings. View distance has the biggest effect: doubling it multiplies the load several times, so lower it first if the server struggles.
For a quick estimate based on your expected player count and whether you run mods, use our resource calculator. Its numbers are rough estimates, not official figures.
Self-host or rent?
Self-hosting on your own computer costs nothing and is fine for you and a few friends. You will need to open the UDP port on your router, your computer has to stay on, and your home connection is exposed.
Renting a server gives you a stable connection, 24/7 uptime and usually DDoS protection, which matters if you want a public server. HytaleLobby’s rent a server page covers one partner option (it is a partner link, so we may earn a commission).
Once it is running
- Make sure players can join with Direct Connect using your address and port.
- List your server on HytaleLobby for free.
- Install the query plugin so your status shows online: see how status checks work.
- Optionally connect Votifier so players are rewarded when they vote.
